Frequently Asked Questions

How does the PDF to Word converter work?

The tool uses pdf.js to extract text content and layout information from each page of your PDF. It analyzes font sizes to detect headings, groups text into paragraphs, and then generates a Word-compatible .doc file. All processing happens in your browser โ€” no file is ever uploaded.

Is the output a .docx or .doc file?

The tool generates a .doc file (Word 97-2003 format) using HTML-to-Word conversion. This format opens perfectly in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, and any other word processor. Once opened in Word, you can save it as .docx if needed.

What types of PDFs work best?

Text-based PDFs (digital documents, exported from Word/Google Docs, research papers) produce the best results. Scanned PDFs (images of text) won't work well because they don't contain extractable text โ€” you'd need OCR first.

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens entirely in your browser using the pdf.js library. Your files never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy and security.

How does heading detection work?

The tool analyzes font sizes across the document. The most common font size is treated as body text, while larger fonts are mapped to Heading 1โ€“4 based on their relative size. In "By bold text" mode, bold lines are treated as headings. You can also disable heading detection for plain paragraphs only.

What about images, tables, and formatting?

The tool extracts text content only. Images are not included in the output. Tables are approximated as plain text. Complex formatting like colors, fonts, and exact positioning may not be preserved. The output is clean, editable text with heading structure โ€” ideal for further editing in Word.

Can I edit the document after conversion?

Absolutely! The generated .doc file opens in any word processor as a fully editable document. You can fix formatting, add images, apply styles, and restructure the content as needed.

Is there a file size or page limit?

There's no hard limit, but very large PDFs (100+ pages) may take longer to process and use more memory. The tool processes pages sequentially with a progress bar. For best performance, we recommend PDFs under 50MB.
