Frequently Asked Questions
How does image compression work?
Image compression reduces file size by lowering the JPEG/WebP quality factor or re-encoding at a lower bit depth. The browser's Canvas API re-encodes the image with your chosen quality level. Higher quality = larger file, lower quality = smaller file.
What quality should I use?
For most photos, 70-85% quality is virtually indistinguishable from the original while cutting file size by 50-70%. For web images, 60-75% is often sufficient. For PNG images, quality doesn't affect file size โ consider converting to WebP for better compression.
What's the difference between this and the Image Converter?
The Image Compressor focuses on reducing file size while keeping the same format. The Image Converter focuses on changing between formats (JPG, PNG, WebP) with optional resize and rotation. This tool is optimized for batch compression with a clear before/after size comparison.
Can I compress multiple images at once?
Yes! Upload multiple images and they'll all be compressed with the same settings. You can download them individually or as a ZIP file. The summary bar shows total size savings across all images.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No! All compression happens entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images never leave your device. This is 100% private and secure.
Why is my PNG not getting smaller?
PNG is a lossless format โ the quality slider doesn't affect PNG compression. Re-encoding a PNG through the browser's Canvas API may even produce a larger file than the original, because the built-in PNG encoder is not as optimized as the tool that created the original file. To reduce PNG file size, switch the output format to WebP (which supports both lossy and lossless compression) or JPEG, or reduce the image dimensions using the Max Width option.
Is this tool free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up required. All processing happens in your browser.
