Whisper is one of the most accurate open-source speech recognition models. The "Small" model offers excellent accuracy for most audio. Accuracy depends on audio quality, background noise, and speaker clarity.
Is my audio uploaded to a server?
No! Your audio file is processed entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. It never gets uploaded to any server. This ensures complete privacy — you can even use this tool offline after the model is cached.
Why is the first transcription slow?
The first time you use this tool, your browser downloads the Whisper model (~75MB for Tiny, ~250MB for Small). This only happens once — the model is cached by your browser, so subsequent transcriptions load the model instantly.
What audio/video formats are supported?
You can upload any common audio format (MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A, FLAC) or video format (MP4, WebM). The audio track will be extracted from video files automatically.
What languages are supported?
Whisper supports 99 languages including English, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Portuguese, Italian, and many more. Use "Auto detect" to automatically identify the language.
What is SRT/VTT format?
SRT and VTT are subtitle file formats used by video players (YouTube, VLC, etc.). They contain text with timestamps so you can add subtitles to videos. Download these files and use them in any video player that supports subtitles.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes! This tool works on modern mobile browsers. However, transcription may be slower on mobile devices due to limited computational resources. For best results, use a desktop browser with Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
