Frequently Asked Questions
What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in photos by digital cameras and smartphones. It records camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), lens information, GPS location, date/time, and more. Most JPEG and TIFF images contain EXIF data.
Can I remove EXIF data from my photos?
This viewer only reads and displays EXIF data โ it does not modify the original file. If you want to remove EXIF data for privacy, the act of uploading to any website would typically strip it. All processing here happens in your browser โ your photos are never uploaded.
Why doesn't my image have EXIF data?
EXIF data is lost when images are edited, screenshotted, or processed by certain software (especially social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp automatically strip it). PNG files generally don't contain EXIF data either.
How accurate is the GPS data?
GPS data in EXIF is as accurate as the device that captured it โ typically within 5-10 meters for modern smartphones. If your photo has GPS coordinates, we provide a direct link to view the location on Google Maps.
Is my photo uploaded to your server?
No. All EXIF extraction happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your photo never leaves your device, ensuring complete privacy and security.
What image formats are supported?
EXIF data is primarily found in JPEG and TIFF images. PNG files don't typically contain EXIF data, and WebP support varies. For the best results, try photos directly from your camera or phone without editing.
Why does GPS location matter for privacy?
Many people don't realize that photos shared online may contain exact GPS coordinates of where they were taken โ including your home, workplace, or children's school. Checking EXIF before sharing helps you understand what information you're revealing.
