Frequently Asked Questions

What is image pixelation?

Pixelation (or mosaic) is the process of replacing fine image details with larger blocks of average color. It's commonly used to blur faces, license plates, or sensitive information in images. Our tool lets you control block size, shape, color mode, and even select specific areas to pixelate.

What pixel shapes are available?

We support four pixel shapes: Square (classic mosaic), Circle (dot matrix), Hexagon (honeycomb pattern), and Diamond. Each creates a distinct visual style. Combine with color modes like 8-bit or sepia for retro effects.

Can I pixelate only a specific area?

Yes! Select "Select area (privacy blur)" in the Processing Range, then drag your mouse on the original image to draw a selection rectangle. Only the selected region will be pixelated โ€” perfect for blurring faces or license plates while keeping the rest of the image sharp.

What color modes are supported?

Original (keep source colors), Grayscale (black & white), Sepia (vintage tone), Invert (reverse colors), 8-bit (256-color palette), and 4-bit (16-color palette). The 8-bit and 4-bit modes use nearest-color matching for retro game aesthetics.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. All image processing happens entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy and security.

What is the block gap feature?

The gap setting adds space between pixel blocks, creating a grid-like pattern. At 0px, blocks are seamless. Increasing the gap creates a stylized dotted or grid appearance, which works especially well with non-square shapes.
