What does the Heading Structure Analyzer do?
It reads your Word (.docx) document and extracts the heading hierarchy (Heading 1 through Heading 6) to build a visual tree. For each section, it counts the number of words and estimates reading time, helping you understand the structure and balance of your document at a glance.
How are words counted per section?
Each heading in your document starts a new section. All text between one heading and the next heading of the same or higher level is counted as that section's content. For example, all paragraphs after a Heading 2 and before the next Heading 1 or Heading 2 are counted under that Heading 2's section.
Why don't my headings show up?
This tool recognizes Word's built-in heading styles (Heading 1โ6), localized heading styles (e.g., โ 1 in Chinese Word or WPS), styles based on heading styles, and paragraphs with manual outline levels set via the Paragraph dialog. If you formatted headings manually (bold text, larger font) without applying heading styles or setting outline levels, they won't appear. To fix this, apply heading styles from the Styles panel, or set an outline level via Format โ Paragraph โ Outline Level.
Is my document uploaded to a server?
No. Your .docx file is processed entirely in your browser. We unzip the file and parse its XML content locally using JavaScript. Your document never leaves your device โ this is 100% private.
What is the reading time estimate based on?
We use an average reading speed of 200 words per minute for English text. This is a common standard used in publishing and education. Your actual reading speed may vary.
Can I export the document outline?
Yes! Click "Export Outline (MD)" to download a Markdown file containing the heading tree with word counts and reading times for each section. This is useful for creating a table of contents or document summary.
Does it support .doc files?
No, only .docx files (Word 2007 and later) are supported. The older .doc format uses a binary structure that can't be parsed in the browser. Convert your .doc file to .docx first using Word or Google Docs.
Is this tool free?
