How does the Word Image Editor work?
A .docx file is actually a ZIP archive. When you upload a file, we unzip it in your browser using JSZip and look for image files in the word/media/ directory. You can then edit individual images (resize, rotate, compress) or apply batch operations to all images at once. When you're done, click "Download Modified .docx" to get a new Word file with your edited images.
Can I compress images to reduce Word file size?
Yes! Click "Compress All" to reduce the quality of all JPEG images at once (default 70% quality). PNG images are re-encoded through canvas, which may also reduce their size. You can adjust the compression level with a quality slider. Only images that actually become smaller will be updated.
Can I resize all images at once?
Yes! Click "Resize All" and specify the maximum width and height. By default, images larger than these dimensions will be scaled down while maintaining their aspect ratio, and smaller images won't be enlarged.
What does "Pad to exact dimensions" do?
When enabled, all images will be scaled to fit within the specified max width and height (maintaining aspect ratio), then placed on a canvas of exactly the specified size. The remaining space is filled with a background color of your choice (white by default). This is useful when you need all images to be a uniform size, such as 1024ร1024 for thumbnails or AI model inputs. Without padding, images keep their original aspect ratio and may be smaller than the max dimensions.
Can I select specific images for batch operations?
Yes! Each image card has a checkbox in the top-left corner. Check the images you want to process, then click "Compress Selected" or "Resize Selected" โ the batch operation will only apply to the checked images. If no images are selected, the operation applies to all (filtered) images. Use "Select All" or "Deselect All" for quick selection.
How does the filter work?
Click the "Filter" button to open the filter panel. You can filter images by width range, height range, file size range, and format. Filtered-out images are dimmed but remain visible. Use "Select Filtered" to quickly select all images that match the current filter criteria โ useful when you want to process only large images, or only PNG files.
How does the single image editor work?
Click the "Edit" button on any image card to open the editor. You can resize (with optional aspect ratio lock), rotate (90ยฐ/180ยฐ/270ยฐ), and adjust JPEG compression quality. A live canvas preview shows the result before you apply changes.
How are edited images saved back to the Word document?
When you download the modified .docx, we replace the original image files inside the ZIP archive with your edited versions. The document's XML structure and image references remain untouched, ensuring the file opens correctly in Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice.
Is it safe to upload my Word document?
Yes! Your file is processed entirely in your browser โ it is never uploaded to any server. All extraction, editing, and re-packaging happens locally using JavaScript, so your document and its contents remain 100% private.
What image formats are supported?
The tool extracts all image formats that Word can embed, including PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, EMF, and WMF. Editing (resize, rotate, compress) is available for raster formats (PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, WebP). Non-previewable formats like EMF/WMF can still be downloaded individually.
Can I revert an image to its original state?
Yes. After editing an image, a "Revert" button appears on its card. Click it to restore the original, unedited image. You can also use the "Reset" button inside the edit modal to undo changes before applying them.
