Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Word Merge tool work?
The tool extracts the content (paragraphs, tables, images) from each .docx file's internal XML, then combines them into a single document. The first file serves as the base โ its styles, headers, and footers are preserved. Content from subsequent files is appended in order.
Will formatting be preserved?
Basic formatting (headings, bold, italic, lists, tables) is preserved because .docx files share standard style definitions. However, if a document uses custom styles not defined in the first (base) document, those styles may fall back to default formatting. For best results, merge documents that use similar templates.
Can I reorder the documents?
Yes! After adding files, you can drag them to reorder, or use the up/down arrows. The documents will be merged in the order shown, from top to bottom.
What does "Insert page break between documents" do?
When enabled (default), each merged document starts on a new page. When disabled, content from the next document flows immediately after the previous one, which may cause paragraphs to merge visually.
What does "Add filename as Heading 1" do?
When enabled, the tool inserts the original filename (without extension) as a Heading 1 at the start of each merged document's content. This creates a visual separator and a navigable outline in the merged document.
Is there a limit on the number of files?
There is no fixed limit, but merging many large documents will consume browser memory. For best performance, merge fewer than 20 documents at a time. All processing happens in your browser, so performance depends on your device.
Are images preserved in the merged document?
Images from the first (base) document are fully preserved. Images from subsequent documents may not appear if they reference resources not included in the base file's ZIP archive. For documents with many images, consider merging fewer files at once.
Is this tool free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up required. All processing happens in your browser โ your files never leave your device.
